Christian Maturity Assessment

Every one of us who has given our lives to Christ longs to be more like Him. From the moment of salvation that desire is hardwired into us. God has made us new creations and our desire is to live righteously (I Cor. 5:17). This is the work that God promised to do in our lives. He promised to make us more like his Son every day (Phil. 1:6). Every time we choose to do what the Holy Spirit leads us to do and live a life that evidences the fruits of the Spirit, God’s Spirit confirms with our spirit that we are God’s children and joy fills our hearts (Romans 8:16). That is why this assessment should be a joyful experience.

Christian maturity is not a destination, but a process. This assessment is a valuable part of that process. When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, the process begins – we walk with Him, engage in spiritual disciplines, and see the fruits of the Spirit become more and more evident. This growth is an awesome thing, but it is not just for our benefit. Our spiritual growth is what God desires so that His Kingdom grows as we build up others in the body of Christ and bring His love to the world. Some growth happens spontaneously, and some growth requires effort on our part. But all growth will continue until we are glorified and meet Jesus face-to-face.

The Apostle Paul recognized this process in his own life and described it in the following way: "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:12-14).

One of the frustrating things about Christian maturity is that it is difficult to “see”. We are often aware when we don’t do the right thing, but rarely are we able to “see” when we are “maturing” in our walk with the Lord. This assessment will help you become more aware of where you are growing and that you are making progress – so you can rejoice in that growth and then move forward more intentionally in areas that haven’t seen the changes you desire.

This assessment is composed of behaviors and attitudes that are indicative of Christian maturity. This assessment is not a “test,” but a tool for helping you identify areas of your Christian life that the Holy Spirit wants you to look at. However, it will only work if you are honest...really honest. Yes, you might have to admit that there are areas that need some change – maybe even major change. But in order for this tool to work effectively, you need to forget about looking perfect.

God already knows every detail of your life, so you aren’t fooling Him. Remember, even if you need change, there is no condemnation from God (Rom. 8:1), only His gentle and persistent encouragement to become more like Christ.

So, let this tool and the Holy Spirit work in your life. Be tough on yourself. Pray what David did in Psalms 26:2 “Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind.” If you are willing, the blessing of God will be abundant, and when you take this assessment again, you should notice some significant improvements.

This assessment will not cure you, grow you, and shouldn’t make you feel guilty. It was designed to help you be more receptive to the leading of the Holy Spirit as He forms you into the image of Jesus.

If you are receptive, this assessment can be used by the Holy Spirit like a mentor in your life who will guide you, remind you, love you, and comfort you throughout the process of maturation. It was designed to show you the areas where Christ is clearly evident in you and areas where you need to open your eyes to the next area where God longs to reveal himself in you.

So, let this tool and the Holy Spirit work in your life. Allow yourself to discover the fullness of the person God has created you to be with all your magnificent gifting, talents and abilities.

Be lovingly tough on yourself. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Press on to maturity!
